Enterpising Women Magazine Spring 2026

LEADERSHIP by Lori Harris The ripple effect: creating value, growth and opportunity for the next generation When a woman rises, she does not rise alone. She carries with her every girl who ever watched her climb. There is a science to legacy. It is not accidental, nor does it belong exclusively to the realm of inspiration and aspiration. When enterprising women deliberately create value, growth, and opportunity for young women, they are engaged in something that researchers in organizational psychology, neuroscience, and social capital theory have studied for decades. The results are unambiguous: intentional, sustained mentorship and sponsorship by accomplished women does not just change individual lives, it restructures entire systems of possibility. The science of creating opportunity Social capital research consistently shows that access, not just ability, determines who advances. Dr. Herminia Ibarra of London Business School has documented how women often receive mentorship (guidance and counsel) when what they need is sponsorship: someone with power who advocates for them in rooms they cannot yet enter. The difference is profound. Mentors shape thinking; sponsors shape careers. Enterprising women who understand this distinction, and optimize both, become architects of mobility rather than simply advisors to it. Neuroscience adds another dimension. Research on social learning theory, pioneered by Albert Bandura, demonstrates that observing a credible, successful model activates the same neural pathways as direct experience. When a young woman sees a leader who looks like her, speaks like her, and has navigated challenges she recognizes, her brain encodes the possibility of that outcome as real and achievable. Representation, in neurological terms, is not a nicety. It is a developmental catalyst. Take the motivation assessment Nine questions, three sections, mirroring the article’s structure: creating opportunity, staying motivated, and building legacy. Rate each statement honestly from 1 (rarely true) to 5 (consistently true). There are no right or wrong answers, just a mirror to help you see where you are today. Creating opportunity ■ I actively sponsor, not just mentor, younger women by advocating for them in spaces they don’t yet have access to. ■ I am intentional about being visible and showing up authentically as a model for what is possible. ■ I connect young women to opportunities, networks, and rooms where their futures can be shaped. Staying motivated ■ I have a clear sense of purpose that connects my leadership to something larger than my own career. ■ I belong to a peer community that encourages responsibility to developing young women. ■ Lifting others up genuinely energizes me rather than depletes me. Building lasting legacy ■ The programs and opportunities I have created for women are embedded ins systems, not dependent on my personal involvement. ■ I actively teach others how I identify, develop, mentor, and advocate for emerging talent. ■ I expect, and create norms around, those I have sponsored paying it forward to others. Scoring Legacy Builder — 38 to 45 points You are living this work with intention and consistency. Your leadership is already generating a cascade of opportunity for others. The next frontier is ensuring your methods are documented and institutionalized, so they outlast your tenure. Active Cultivator — 27 to 37 points You are engaged and doing meaningful work, with real opportunities to deepen your impact, particularly in building systems that extend beyond your personal effort. You have the foundation; now consider what structures would carry this forward without you. Emerging Champion — 16 to 26 points You are beginning to step into this role, and that matters. Look at where your scores are lowest, that is your starting point. Small, consistent actions in sponsorship or community-building will compound quickly. At the Threshold — 9 to 15 points This work may be arriving at exactly the right moment. You have more capacity to create opportunity for others than you may realize. Begin with visibility: show up, speak up, and let young women see what is possible. Each section (Creating Opportunity, Staying Motivated, Building Legacy) scores out of 15, giving a total of 45 points 88 enterprising Women
