LEADERSHIP Third, require it forward. Create explicit expectations within your organizations and networks that those who have been sponsored will sponsor others. Make reciprocity a cultural norm, not a personal choice. Mentorship also multiplies itself. Studies show that nearly nine in ten professionals who have mentors later become mentors themselves, demonstrating how opportunity compounds when leaders intentionally invest in others. (Association for Talent Development, 2023) There is an elegant mathematical truth at work here. If every woman you meaningfully mentor or sponsor goes on to mentor or sponsor three others, who each mentor or sponsor three more, the exponential growth of that network of opportunity becomes civilization-shaping. This is not hyperbole. This is arithmetic applied to human potential. Researchers studying social network diffusion call this the “cascade effect,” and it demonstrates that sustained, intentional investment in people’s futures can generate social change at a scale no individual act of generosity could achieve alone. In a world defined by accelerating change, the organizations that will lead tomorrow are those building leadership pipelines today, particularly pipelines that intentionally develop, mentor, and sponsor women across every level of influence. The obligation and the honor Every enterprising woman reading these words is here, in part, because someone believed in her before she fully believed in herself. A teacher who stayed after class. A mentor who made the introduction. A leader who said her name in a room where it mattered. The debt we carry is not financial. It is human. And the only currency in which it can be repaid is forward. The science is clear. The motivation is there if we build it wisely. And the mechanisms for perpetuating this legacy across generations are available to any leader willing to think beyond her tenure. What remains is only the decision: to be intentional, to be consistent, and to understand, at the deepest level, that creating value and opportunity for young women is not the work beside the work. It is the work. It is the most enduring measure of a life well-led. Leadership legacies are not built through intention alone; they are built through patterns of behavior repeated over time.
