GLOBAL VIEW by Esther Poulsen The Global Summit of Women: Desert Dreaming It’s May and I stand atop a sand dune outside Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, baking in 105-degree heat. Peering across a vast expanse of desert, above is a cloudless sapphire sky pierced by the blazing sun. Undulating waves of muted gold stretch as far as the eye can see. The tableau is punctuated by an occasional gnarled tree or a caravan of dusty SUVs. I cast a lonely shadow on the rippling sand and snap a photo to remember this strange, beautiful land. This dry heat is supposedly less oppressive than the moist, cloying summer in the U.S. east and south. My skin bakes and tans in the sunshine, but it’s not unbearable.
